I recently contacted Julie Woodyer, Campaigns Director at Zoocheck Canada Inc. to request whatever information she thought I would find interesting in order to better understand their position with regard to Lucy. Julie emailed me on September 1st, 2009 with the following response:
I have attached the section from the zoo’s Master Plan (which was approved by the council) that explains why the zoo wants to keep Lucy – check out the highlighted sections of the document. Essentially they believe that she is a good fundraising tool for the zoo. The fact also remains that she is probably the most expensive animal at the zoo to maintain and 60% of the funding to keep the zoo open comes from the city (taxpayer dollars).
